You follow along you stay quiet you go on about your everyday life just hoping you'll find food. Your neighbor tells you of the nightly arrest and how they seem to be at random and with out real cause. You start to wonder are these people getting arrested really gulity of the crimes charged against them. That night you go home questioning and sit down to give your two children a sip of beat soup because you only have that to last the week. You hear screaming loud noises and banging you look out your window and see your neighbor being brought out to into the street and beat by these strange uniformed men and take her away leaving her daughter there at the house on her own. You know your  neighbor was not a traitor to Soviet Russia she loved her country and would never committ a crime against any nation. You know the child will die no one will take her in, they cant even take care of themselves. Your heart breaks as you hear her cry for her mother and bang on the doors of others to let her in to have shelter from the cold. No one will if they do they will be considered a helper to there neighbor and thought of as an "enemie to the people". You choose to drownd out the cries and try to get to sleep, slowly the yells for help get quieter and slowly stop as her body falls into the snowy ground and takes her last quiver of hope and you wait for morning.
